EMAT – ELECTROMAGNETIC ACOUSTIC TRANSDUCER

EMAT is a combination of eddy current and ultrasound methods. Due to Lorentz force and effects of eddy currents inside the tested material electrons and atoms interact within the crystal lattice, leading to vibrations. This in turn creates ultrasound waves that spread through the material. EMAT probe does not include ultrasound transducers, but permanent magnet and coils instead.

Considering the composition of the probe it is not necessary to use a medium allowing transfer of ultrasound into the tested object. The probe can be 0.2-2.0 mm from the object. That is why EMAT method is convenient for measuring of high-temperature components, where the traditional ultrasound testing fails due to evaporation of the medium, or damaged ultrasound transducers.

We use EMAT to measure pipeline, tube and vessel wall thickness.
